Basic Yoga for Children

(courtesy of 2Simple's Well-being software, Striver)

Children should wear loose, comfortable clothing and have bare feet to enable grip and movement of the feet.

A quiet and clear space with few distractions will help children to focus.

For relaxation sections, children could have a soft toy to hug if this helps them to relax.

The aim of these units is to introduce the idea of yoga as a means to focus on oneself, to learn some basic poses and relaxation techniques.

Children should not pose in positions that are painful to them but be encouraged to use a variation for their own comfort.

To help children develop resilience, take care to praise for effort rather than perfect poses. Some children will be much less flexible than others and find it harder to follow precise instructions but should be encouraged to persist and improve the areas in which they struggle.

Each age-appropriate lesson (20-30 mins) contains both instructions and pictures of the poses. It is advisable to follow these lessons in order.  Alternatively, just download the pictures & try them without following a lesson plan.
