We are...Digital Toy Inventors

We were introduced to the BBC Micro:bit for the first time!  We thought long and hard about how we could turn this mini-computer into a useful toy, but first we had to understand how to program these gadgets.

We experimented with the LEDs to create various shapes.  Our first challenge was to create a flashing heart.

We also created an 'Interactive Mood Badge' to show how we were feeling, using a happy or sad face.

We were enjoying it so much, we tried creating our own algorithms for animating a man.  We were successful in making him walk, run and dance.  Here are some of our animations:

We learned how to use variables to program a micro:bit to simulate a coin toss.  When button 'A' is pressed, it will choose to display 'head' or 'tails'.

We developed our program further using the 'random' feature to turn our micro:bits into dice!  When the micro:bit is shaken, it will select a random number from 1 to 6.

All of our programming skills & knowledge for this term culminated in producing a digital 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' toy.  We expanded our previous programs so that when the micro:bit is shaken, it will randomly show one of three pictures to represent either the rock, the paper or the scissors.

Once we had debugged & tested our games, we downloaded them to the micro:bits and played 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' against each other.  We had a lot of fun!
