Admissions Statement

Our School Governors have agreed to comply with the Local Authority (LA) requirements for admissions.

The Local Authority Planned Admission Number (PAN) for our school is 17.

Starting School

Parents who are applying for children of Reception Class age can do so on-line until the national closing date at www.somerset.gov.uk/admissions. If a paper form is required this can be obtained by phoning Somerset Direct.

In Somerset there is one admission in September for all the children whose fifth birthday falls in the ensuing academic year.
At Kingston St Mary children attend part-time in the first instance, monitored carefully by our foundation stage teachers to ensure that our new children start their school life happy and confident.
Our staggered induction works towards pupils being in school full-time by week 3.
The school will notify you of the induction arrangements in the term prior to your child starting at Kingston St Mary School.
All children must, by law, start school at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday.

Moving School in Years 1 to 6

Places are allocated in accordance with the Local Authority’s published arrangements.

The school will administer applications for pupils up to the Planned Admission Number (PAN) of 17 for each year group at our school. An application form can be requested from the school or from the Admissions section of the Local Authority website.

In accordance with County guidelines the following admission criteria apply in order of priority:

  • Looked after children (currently in the care of the Local Authority)
  • Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs or Educational Health Care Plan whose school placement has been identified by a multi-agency professional team.
  • Children living in the catchment area, with an older sibling at the school at the time of admission, and who live at the same address.
  • Children living in the catchment area.
  • Children living outside the catchment area, with an older sibling, at the time of admission, and who live at the same address.
  • Children living outside the catchment area but nearest to the school.

Places may be refused:

  • Where the PAN for the year group would be exceeded;
  • Infant class size would exceed thirty (government ruling).

Where an application has been refused in any year group
The child will be placed on a waiting list. This will be kept strictly in order of over subscription criteria by the Local Authority, as the Admission Authority, and the child will remain on the waiting list until the end of the academic year in which the application was refused. Parents are responsible for informing the Admission Authority of any changes in their circumstances, which could affect their place on the waiting list.
